As part of the festival medical services at the Reading and Glastonbury music festivals, Joe Ellis-Gage has seen the risks that young people take and how fun times can quickly turn into something more dangerous.

With his groundbreaking Adventurer First Aid course, Joe aims to use his nursing and first aid experience to better prepare young people for adventures both close to home and overseas. Joe says:

“At festivals, I have treated people who have had accidents, taken substances, collapsed or been crushed in a crowd. Young people definitely know how to have fun but get involved in potentially risky activities. I want young people to come away from our Adventurer course with the confidence to step up in an emergency and take charge if necessary.”

Joe is keen to prepare young people for the fact that emergency services can be very different in other countries to those in the UK. He says:

“I think that we are so fortunate in the UK to have very responsive Emergency Services who we can rely on. However if you are in a car accident on a deserted road in the Australian outback or halfway up a mountain in the Andes then you will not have the luxury of calling 999 and getting someone to rescue you within a few minutes. You need to know what to do yourself!”

For Joe, Adventurer First Aid is about giving young people the skills and confidence to stay calm and take charge. He continues:

“So many people think they may do the wrong thing or make a situation worse in an emergency scenario and that often means they freak out or don’t do anything at all. I think first aid is fairly straightforward and doesn’t need to be overly complicated. Having some fairly basic skills, the ability to stay calm and the confidence to take charge of a situation can make all the difference.”

Joe is a trained paediatric nurse with over ten years nursing experience in a variety of different roles including several years in the Accident & Emergency department (A&E).

Adventurer First Aid is a fun and interactive practical course, designed to fully prepare young people for adventure travel and give them the skills and confidence they need should extreme injuries and accidents occur.

The 6-hour course focuses on key skills for adventure travel and includes emergency first aid medicine, as well as survival and rescue techniques.
